Learning on the Fly

Saying I love books is an understatement. I am an avid reader, bookseller, homeschooling mom, artist and wife. I have a strong opinion on independent businesses (Indie-bound for sure).

Hank Finds An Egg is that special Treasure you wait for.

Hank Finds an Egg - Rebecca Dudley

Hank Finds an Egg by Rebecca Dudley, (Peter Pauper Press) is that rare special treasure you will share with your children and their children.  I adored the artwork in ways I can't even transcribe to words.  The way that Hank's adventure unfolds has children everywhere helping to tell his story.  This is a MUST for any new library, child or no.

Fish, Gregory Mone

Fish - Gregory Mone

I have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mone and his work is just superb.

Who doesn't want to read an adventure story about a boy forced to covert with Pirates!

"Correct! Next to him, the old fellows with the eye patches, those would be the One-Eyed Willies.  A depressing bunch, really.  I'd avoid supping with them if you can, as all they do is talk about their missing eyes, lamenting their loss of depth perception."

LOVE it!

Cheryl

""Why so grim, my lady?"
I glance up, surprised to see Beast riding next to me. How can someone so large move so quietly? I open my mouth to ask him that very question but surprise myself by asking a different one. "Do you know that I have killed more than thirty men?""
Dark Triumph - Robin LaFevers

Leave Your Sleep

Reblogged from Learning on the Fly:
Leave Your Sleep - Natalie Merchant, Barbara McClintock

I loved the illustrations in this poetry book. The Illustrations by Barbara McClintock are charming and the music cd by Natalie Merchant plays in our bookstore all the time! Great choice as a new baby gift.

SPOILER ALERT!

Prairie Evers, by Ellen Airgood

Prairie Evers - Ellen Airgood

I have to say that I thought I was going to love this book. A story of a young girl relocating, making friends, learning lessons, raising chickens!  How fun!  However, the story took a turn for me and jumped routes a little more than halfway through.  I have to say I didn't like this turn of events and thought the subject of Prairie's friend Ivy seeing her mother shoot her father not fitting for the storyline, over the top and this will actually keep me from suggesting this book to the crowd of kids I was looking forward to sharing it with.  I'm sad to say this because the writing and story were fantastic up till this point.  I understand this sort of thing happens but it didn't need to happen in this story.
